Examination & Assessment Policy
- Attendance Requirement
- Attendance in person, at all prescribed and elective lectures and seminars is mandatory. A maximum of 25% absences are allowed in a course to cater for emergencies, sickness etc. There is no provision of leaves in excess of the 25% allowance mentioned above. A student with more than 25% absences in a course will forfeits the right to appear at the examination in that course and shall earn the ‘F’ grade (failure) in the course.
- The students who join the semester late because of any reason shall be marked absent for the previous classes. In case, more than 20% of the sessions have been completed by the faculty the student shall earn ‘F’ Grade.
- In addition to punctuality and meeting the prescribed attendance requirements, each student is required to actively participate in the class and complete their assignments and homework on time.
- Minimum attendance requirement is subject to change as per policy of HEC and the concerned council (if any).
B. Grading System Academic Performance and Academic Promotions
- A student’s performance in a course is measured by the percentage marks, letter grade and Grade Points (GP) earned in the course as explained in the following table.
| Percentage Marks | Letter Grade | Grade Points | Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 – 100 | A+ | 4.00 | Exceptional |
| 85 – 89 | A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| 80 – 84 | A- | 3.80 | Very Good |
| 75 – 79 | B+ | 3.50 | Good |
| 70 – 74 | B | 3.00 | Average |
| 65 – 69 | C+ | 2.50 | Fair |
| 60 – 64 | C | 2.00 | Satisfactory |
| Below 60 | F | 0.00 | Failure/Poor |
| I | Incomplete and not graded | ||
| W | Withdrawn and not graded | ||
| K | Course in progress | ||
| P | Pass |
- Criteria for the award of grade I comprise the following.
- Grade I may be awarded at the end of a semester if all, but a minor portion of the course work has been satisfactorily completed. The reasons include extension given for the submission of “term report”, ‘Project Report”, Assignments and a ‘compulsion’ on account of which the student is unable to attend Final Term Exam Paper.
- Grade I can be awarded to a maximum of two courses in one semester.
- The compulsion for not being able to attend the Exam Paper must be supported by verifiable evidence.
- Reaching late for the exam is not entertained as a ‘compulsion’.
- The Controller of Examinations will award Grade I on recommendation of the concerned HOD.
- Grade I is not awarded if a student’s attendance or performance in the course is poor to the extent that he/she has no chance of passing it.
- After the deficiency is replenished, the instructor will replace the grade I by the grade that the concerned student actually earns on a Change of Grade form/Student’s application, get it approved by the Dean and submit it to the Office of Examinations for processing.
- Grade I will remain valid only for one semester. In case the course in which grade I is awarded is not offered in the subsequent semester, the grade I shall remain valid till the next semester when the course is offered.
- Grade I does not enter into the calculation of the GPA for the semester or CGPA until it is replaced by a proper scaled letter grade (A+ to F).
- If grade I is not replaced by a proper grade (A+ to F) by the concerned authorities within the stipulated period, it will revert to a failing grade ‘F’.
- Grade W is assigned for a course that a student withdraws within the time period set in the academic calendar for each semester.
- Grade W is not counted in the calculation of GPA or CGPA.
- Grade K is assigned for such courses, research projects or theses that are not completed in one semester and last for two or more semesters.
- The Controller of Examinations will award grade K on the recommendations of the concerned HOD.
- Grade K is not counted in the calculation of GPA or CGPA.
- Grade P is awarded in such courses or examinations for which percentage marks, scaled letter grades from F to A+ or grade points from zero to 4.00 are not awarded. All non-credit courses, compulsory internships that must be passed, PhD comprehensive examination and MS/MPhil and PhD thesis fall into this category.
- Grade P does not enter into the calculations of GPA or CGPA.
- A Student’s progress in a semester is measured by Grade Point Average (GPA), which is a weighted average of grade points (GPs) in the courses registered in the semester, where the weight of each course is equal to its credits hours (CH). It is calculated as:
- A student’s cumulative performance in all the semesters is measured by Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which is calculated using the formula:
- A student’s status is determined by his/her GPA in the current and previous semesters.
- If a student earns GPA of 2.00 or higher, he/she is unconditionally promoted to the next semester.
- If the GPA of a student falls short of 2.00, he/she is given the first academic warning and is placed on probation. He/she is expected to improve his/her grade but is conditionally promoted to the next semester.
- If the student who is on the first academic warning/probation continues to obtain less than 2.00 GPA in the next consecutive semester, he/she is served the second and the last warning and is placed on the second and the last probation.
- If the student who is already on the second academic warning/probation, again obtains less than 2.00 GPA in the next consecutive semester, he/she is dropped from his registered academic program and is no more considered a student of the Institute.
C. Award of Degree
A student, in order to become eligible for the award of degree, must attain a graduating CGPA of 2.00/4.00 for the undergraduate, 2.50/4.00 for MS/MPhil and 3.00/4.00 for PhD programs.
